What is the Franklin H. Williams Award?
Peace Corps is proud to recognize Ambassador Williams and pay tribute to his remarkable legacy.
TheFranklin H. Williams Award recognizes ethnically diverse returned Peace Corps Volunteers who exemplify a commitment to community service and Peace Corps’ Third Goal of promoting a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.
Franklin H. Williams was an early architect of the Peace Corps. He worked at the agency from its inception in 1961 to 1963 and helped Sargent Shriver – the first Peace Corps Director – promote the agency and its programs to the world. Ambassador Williams’ exceptional public service career included positions as the Peace Corps Regional Director for Africa, the U.S. representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana.
The first Franklin H. Williams award ceremony was held in 1999. Since that time, the ceremony has been held in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008. To date, 92 outstanding returned Peace Corps Volunteers have received the award.
What are the nomination criteria?
Candidates for the Franklin H. Williams award must be ethnically diverse Returned Peace Corps Volunteers who have demonstrated a commitment to community service, made efforts to generate awareness about the Peace Corps, provided assistance to Peace Corps’ regional recruiting office staff, and/or worked to promote Peace Corps’ Third Goal.
Where can you get the nomination form and submit it?
The nomination process is open to the public; anyone can nominate an exemplary Returned Peace Corps Volunteer. If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else who fits the criteria, please contact fcastro@peacecorps.gov .
How are the awardees chosen?
Each of the nine Peace Corps Regional Recruitment Offices will review nominations and submit the name of their regional awardee to Peace Corps’ Office of Diversity Recruitment and National Outreach by FRIDAY, JULY 9, 2010. All nine regional awardees will receive the Franklin H. Williams Award at the ceremony held at Peace Corps Headquarters in Washington, DC.
When is the awards ceremony?
The Franklin H. Williams Award Ceremony will be held on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2010 at the Paul D. Coverdell Peace Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C. If you are interested in attending, please send an email to fcastro@peacecorps.gov with a contact phone number, e-mail, and mailing address.
